Strychnine's Return: A Double-Edged Sword for Alberta and Saskatchewan Farmers
The use of strychnine for gopher control in Alberta and Saskatchewan has officially commenced, but it's a contentious issue with a complex web of implications. This rodenticide, once a common tool for farmers, was banned by Health Canada in 2024 due to environmental risks, including the potential harm to at-risk species like swift foxes and burrowing owls.
However, the Alberta government argues that gopher infestations pose a significant financial threat, estimated at over $800 million annually to hay and pastures. This has led to a time-limited emergency use authorization, allowing farmers to employ strychnine until November 2027, but only during strict seasonal windows.
The recent delays in strychnine distribution have left farmers in a difficult position. The spring application window, crucial for optimal control, was missed due to supply chain issues faced by the sole authorized manufacturer, Agromax. This has resulted in a scramble for the limited product, with some municipalities resorting to lottery systems to determine who can purchase it.
Despite the urgency, concerns arise regarding the effectiveness of strychnine this late in the year. Gophers enter a dormant state called estivation during July to September, similar to hibernation but triggered by extreme heat. This makes the bait less attractive, and agricultural fieldman Shelby Oracheski from the Municipal District of Wainwright suggests that the best time for such treatments is before the spring green-up.
The environmental impact of strychnine is a significant concern. Conservation specialist Ruiping Luo warns that strychnine can move up the food chain, affecting predators and other animals unintendedly. Health Canada's re-evaluation revealed that more strychnine was used when it was legal than the number of poisoned carcasses retrieved, indicating that some of the poison entered the ecosystem.
Luo emphasizes the need for a multifaceted approach to pest control, suggesting alternatives like legal pesticides, fumigation, and promoting predator activity. The Alberta government provides a list of alternatives, including tall vegetation growth and managed livestock grazing practices, to discourage gopher colonies.
The debate surrounding strychnine's use highlights the challenges of balancing agricultural needs with environmental protection. While farmers grapple with the immediate pressures of gopher infestations, the long-term consequences of strychnine's use on the ecosystem and wildlife remain a critical concern.
